The year 2007 has much in common with the 1930’s, Hollywood, celebrities, bands and dancing all playing prominent roles in both eras’ culture. The fashions of the 1930’s reflected the love for all things glamour and designers today have themselves adopted this into their own collections; long satin ball gowns, for example, are often seen on the red carpets giving a nod to the 1930’s. Hollywood glamour inspired designers then, such as the Italian Elsa Schiaparelli who enjoyed rich fabrics and femininity and who also pioneered the tailored suit design, and continues to do so now. John Galliano, for example, paraded his 1930’s inspired 2008 Spring pret-a-porter collection down a catwalk erected as a giant film set on Saturday, wowing audiences. Galliano’s elaborate and eccentric sparkling collars and glittering tops will no doubt filter down into high street stores across the country by the end of next week, encouraging the spirit of the 1930’s to live on.
